Privacy Policy

Nitramine runs chempire.net. This page says what the site records when you visit, where the records are kept and who can see them.

Every request goes into a public log

Besides the blog and the molecule database, chempire.net studies the automated attacks that hit WordPress sites. For that, the site writes almost every request into a log: the time, the address asked for, the browser's user agent and the IP address, followed by the address of the proxy that passed the request on. Requests for images, the icon and a few style and script files are not written down.

Everything sent to the site is written down the same way, with the time, the address, the full text that was sent and the IP address. That includes the contact form with its name, e-mail address, subject and message, the log-in form and the reading note described below. User names and passwords sent to xmlrpc.php go into a list of their own.

These logs are public: anyone can download them from the folder chempire.net/media/. Once a request log grows past 50 MB, it is packed into an archive in the same public folder; nothing is deleted. Do not send anything through this site that you do not want published.

What reading a page records

When you read a page, your browser sends one short note to chempire.net: the address of the page, the page you came from, the size of your screen, your browser's user agent and whether the browser looks automated. The note leaves only after you scroll, touch the screen, move the pointer or press a key, or after the page has been open for five seconds.

The site keeps the note in a database together with your IP address, the time and the visit number from the cookie below. Page loads by search engines and other known crawlers go into the same database. Nitramine uses it to count readers and to tell people from bots. The analytics code is Nitramine's own; no analytics service is involved. The database is not public, and its records are not deleted automatically.

The one cookie

The first note sets one cookie, cmp_sid. It holds a random number and nothing else, so that the pages you read count as one visit. Scripts cannot read it, it is only sent to chempire.net and it expires after a year. The site stores nothing else in your browser.

Server log

The web server also writes one line per request to its own log: the IP address, the time, the address asked for, the answer's status and size, the page you came from and the browser's user agent. This log is not public. Its oldest part is deleted once it holds 150 MB.

Nothing from other sites

Styles, scripts and the molecule drawings all come from chempire.net, and the text uses the fonts already on your device. The site embeds nothing from other sites. Links to sources and tools open other sites.

Where it is kept

The site, its logs and its database run on a server rented from Hetzner in Germany.
